Miley Cyrus Album Suffers Record-Breaking Fall on Billboard Charts
Bass Persuades drops from No. 1 to No. 157 in its second week, marking the biggest decline for a female artist in Billboard history.
Miley Cyrus's latest album, Bass Persuades, has made an unwelcome entry into the record books with the largest chart drop in Billboard history for a female artist. After debuting at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 last week, the album has plummeted to No. 157 in its second week.
This significant decline surpasses previous records held by Madonna's Madame X, which fell from No. 1 to No. 77 in 2019, and Celine Dion's Courage, which dropped from the top position to No. 111.
Bass Persuades is Cyrus's first release under Atlantic Records, following her departure from Columbia Records earlier this year. The album's initial No. 1 debut was reportedly secured through aggressive sales tactics employed by Atlantic Records. These included slashing the digital price of the album and releasing it in numerous physical formats, such as 16 vinyl variants, nine CD versions, six download variants, and a cassette tape.
The strategy proved successful in the short term, with Bass Persuades narrowly beating country singer Ella Langley's Dandelion by approximately 70 units to claim the top spot. Both Cyrus and Atlantic Records celebrated the win, with the label presenting Cyrus with a floral wreath shaped like a No. 1.
Cyrus expressed her gratitude on Instagram, calling the No. 1 debut "transcendent" and thanking her team and fans for their support.
Meanwhile, other female artists are currently experiencing strong chart performance. Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl has returned to No. 1, boosted by the release of its deluxe 'Encore' edition. Olivia Rodrigo's You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So In Love holds the No. 2 position, demonstrating sustained popularity after four months on the chart. Ella Langley's Dandelion has fallen one spot to No. 3.
This chart performance follows a trend of mixed commercial success for Cyrus's recent albums. Her prior release, Something Beautiful, also failed to achieve significant commercial success. The artist's career has largely been sustained by the popularity of her 2023 single "Flowers," which earned her a Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
Cyrus has not embarked on a full world tour since 2014. However, she is scheduled to perform two sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl this month. These concerts have generated immense demand, with an estimated 1.5 million fans attempting to secure tickets for the 18,000-capacity venue. Cyrus has indicated a preference for such high-profile, localized performances over extensive touring, citing the convenience of being able to return home after shows.
