Michael Kiwanuka Reveals Stroke Recovery Amid New Album Announcement

Award-winning singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has revealed he suffered a stroke several months ago, describing it as a "quite severe" brain injury that will require a "long, tough journey" of rehabilitation. The 39-year-old musician, known for his Mercury Prize win in 2020 and five Brit Award nominations, shared the news via Instagram, explaining the stroke was caused by a bleed in his brain due to high blood pressure.

Kiwanuka stated that the severity of the brain injury means extensive rehabilitation is necessary, but he expressed optimism about his recovery, telling fans, "I'm fighting to get better" and looking forward to seeing them again.

Simultaneously, Kiwanuka announced the release of his fifth album, "Fudge," which was recorded before his health setback. He noted that the recent health issues would have significantly impeded his ability to create music for the foreseeable future.

"It's a long journey recovering from a stroke, which is why I missed some gigs recently out in the US," Kiwanuka wrote, adding that he is unsure when he will be able to perform live again or what that might entail. He confirmed that this has been one of the most challenging periods of his life but feels he is now progressing.

He extended gratitude to the National Health Service staff and all medical professionals who have supported his recovery, as well as his friends and family. "Until then I wish you all well and look forward to seeing you further down the road," he concluded.

Kiwanuka first gained recognition 15 years ago when named the BBC's Sound of 2012. His subsequent work, including his first three albums, received Mercury Prize nominations, and his 2020 album, "Kiwanuka," won the prestigious award. The album also garnered him nominations for best male solo artist and album of the year at the Brits, and best rock album at the Grammy Awards.

In July 2025, Kiwanuka canceled all upcoming live shows on medical advice due to "continued illness." "Fudge" was initially slated for release last year. An early review in Mojo Magazine described the album as "intimate" and "brooding," influenced by Neil Young's "On The Beach."
