The Met Gala for 2027 will feature a new theme, "extraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday," after the Metropolitan Museum of Art canceled its planned retrospective on designer John Galliano.

The upcoming event will focus on elevating everyday garments such as blue jeans and white T-shirts into the realm of high fashion, according to The New York Times.

This theme shift comes one month after the museum and Galliano mutually agreed to part ways with the exhibition plans. The decision followed significant criticism regarding Galliano's past antisemitic and racist remarks from 2011. Public officials and museum donors had called for the cancellation of the event honoring the designer.

Galliano released a statement on Instagram acknowledging that an exhibition of his work would cause pain to some and did not want the controversy to place the Met in a difficult position. Anna Wintour, a long-time supporter and friend of Galliano's, called his decision "courageous" and "the right decision."

Sources told Page Six that substantial work had already been completed for the Galliano exhibition, and themes for the Met Gala are typically finalized a year in advance.
