Melinda Messenger's Journey from Glamour Model to Licensed Psychotherapist

Melinda Messenger, who rose to fame in the 1990s as a prominent glamour model, has undergone a significant life transformation, transitioning from a Page 3 personality to a licensed psychotherapist and wellness advocate.

Messenger, 55, initially gained recognition for her appearances in lads' magazines and pursued acting roles in projects like "Virtual Sexuality" and "Eurotrash." She also worked as a grid girl for Eddie Jordan's Formula One team alongside other notable figures of the era. After welcoming her first child in 2000, Messenger shifted her focus to television presenting, hosting shows such as "Fort Boyard" and "Cowboy Builders."

However, in 2010, Messenger decided to pursue a long-held ambition to become a psychiatrist. "As far back as I can remember, I remember being around seven and thinking I wanted to be a psychiatrist," she recalled. Despite initial parental doubts about her ability to pursue higher education, Messenger persevered, facing an "internal struggle" related to how her previous modeling career would be perceived. "A lot of it is an internal struggle. You can feel trapped by other people's ideas of you," she commented. She became a licensed psychotherapist in 2015 and a master reiki practitioner.

Messenger has spoken about the disconnect between her public persona and her true self during her modeling days. "It’s so far from the reality of who I am – in fact it’s the opposite of who I am inside," she stated. "I guess doing my modelling was a protective front for me, a defence to hide who I really was." She also reflected on moments of feeling vulnerable and exploited as a grid girl, recognizing the impact of such roles on the perception of women.

Motherhood played a pivotal role in her career change. Messenger expressed that she would not want her own daughter to follow the same career path, though she would offer support. Her daughter, she noted, aspires to work in marine conservation.

Messenger is a single mother to three children: Morgan, 26, Flynn, 24, and Evie, 22. Her marriage to Wayne Roberts ended in 2008. She has since had several public relationships, including with ski instructor Warren Smith, photographer Chris Harding, and survival expert Dr. Raj Joshi, with whom she ended her engagement in 2024.

Recently, Messenger has embraced her natural appearance, opting to stop dyeing her hair and showcasing her silver locks. "I've found my hair has never felt healthier. And more importantly for me, I found real freedom and joy in just letting myself be," she shared on Instagram. She also noted her belief that society conditions women to believe they cannot age and that beauty is limited by external expectations. "There’s nothing wrong with colouring your hair, embracing your grey, changing your mind or doing whatever makes you feel good. And this feels good for me," she added.

This decision to embrace her natural hair color followed an incident where she claimed she was removed from hosting the Miss South Yorkshire beauty pageant because she had gone "too grey." Organizers reportedly raised concerns about her appearance and recent spiritual social media posts, as well as a request to reduce her fee. Messenger stated her belief in authenticity and openness, preferring to focus on the positive aspects of her journey.
