Melinda Messenger Embraces 'Silver Siren Era' After Ditching Glamour Modelling for Psychotherapy
The former 'Page 3' star, now 55, has transformed her career and personal style, pursuing her passion for mental health and self-acceptance.
Melinda Messenger, once known as a blonde bombshell gracing the pages of lads' magazines, has undergone a significant transformation in her career and personal life. At 55, the former glamour model has embraced her "silver siren era," trading her signature look for a more natural aesthetic and a career focused on wellness and psychotherapy.
Messenger, who found fame in the 1990s through racy photoshoots and appearances in projects like "Virtual Sexuality" and "Eurotrash," also worked as a grid girl for Eddie Jordan's Formula One team alongside figures like Katie Price and Emma Noble. Her public image at the time was characterized by blonde ringlets, enhanced cleavage, and a megawatt smile, earning her the moniker 'Girl of the Thrillenium.'
A Shift in Focus
The birth of her first child in 2000 marked a turning point, leading Messenger to step back from modelling to focus on television presenting, hosting shows such as "Fort Boyard" and "Cowboy Builders." However, she found her heart wasn't fully invested in this work. In 2010, she decided to pursue a lifelong ambition: becoming a psychiatrist.
"I thought, I have children, I have bills to pay. I was working in television and there was no sign of that letting up," Messenger explained about her career pivot. "I thought, I can carry on doing what I'm doing but how painful would that regret be? I made the decision to go for it and I can tell you, it's the best thing I've ever done."
Her childhood dream of becoming a psychiatrist stemmed from an early age, though her mother initially expressed doubts about the feasibility of higher education. Messenger also acknowledged an "internal struggle" regarding how her past modelling career would be perceived by others. "A lot of it is an internal struggle. You can feel trapped by other people's ideas of you," she stated. "But if you know that's just a perception and not the truth, it's still a challenge not to be held back by that but you can still keep going forward."
Messenger persevered and qualified as a licensed psychotherapist in 2015, also becoming a master reiki practitioner. She described her modelling persona as a "protective front" and a "defence to hide who I really was," contrasting it with her authentic self. "What I'm doing now, this is me. There was always a struggle between the real me and the persona."
Embracing Natural Beauty
Motherhood played a significant role in Messenger's evolving perspective. While she expressed that she wouldn't personally want her own daughter to follow her early career path, she would support her choices. Her daughter, however, is interested in marine conservation.
Nowadays, Messenger juggles her psychotherapy work as a single mother to three children: Morgan, 26, Flynn, 24, and Evie, 22. Her personal life has seen various relationships since her marriage to Wayne Roberts ended in 2008, including brief periods with ski instructor Warren Smith, photographer Chris Harding, and most recently, survival expert Dr. Raj Joshi, with whom she split in 2024 after a six-month engagement.
Following her split from Joshi, Messenger has been embracing a new look, finding "freedom and joy in just letting myself be," particularly by stopping the dyeing of her hair. She shared a striking selfie showcasing her natural grey hair, noting the journey had its "wobbles" but ultimately led to healthier hair and a sense of liberation.
"And more importantly for me, I found real freedom and joy in just letting myself be. I think that's the greatest benefit," she wrote. "That and not buying into the conditioning that women are not allowed to age and that beauty is confined to the expectations of those that profit from it."
This decision to embrace her natural hair colour came after she claimed she was removed from hosting the Miss South Yorkshire beauty pageant. Organizers reportedly raised concerns about her appearance, specifically that she had gone "too grey," and about her recent spiritual social media posts. They also requested a reduction in her hosting fee. Messenger stated that she prefers to focus on the positive and continue to express herself authentically.
Messenger had previously spoken about facing criticism from trolls regarding her grey hair, with some commenting negatively on her appearance and perceived age. She views embracing her natural colour as a stage of life and a rejection of societal pressures on women's aging and beauty standards.
