Mckenna Grace’s ‘Hunger Games’ Press Tour is a Fashion Homage
The actress channels iconic characters and moments from the franchise in her sartorial choices.
Mckenna Grace, who portrays Maysilee Donner in "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," has embraced a fashion strategy for her press tour that is deeply rooted in the "Hunger Games" universe. Working with stylist Molly Dickson, the 20-year-old actress has been seen in a series of ensembles that reference characters, motifs, and key moments from the film franchise. Grace has stated that her outfits are "homage to all the people that were a part of this franchise before I was."
At the London premiere of "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," Grace wore an intricately beaded Almée Couture gown. The dress featured a pastoral landscape with 3D floral appliqués on the skirt, evoking the arena setting of the games. She commented to Entertainment Tonight that she was "just missing a cornucopia in here somewhere."
For interviews, Grace opted for an archival Gucci gown from fall/winter 2016. The dress, with its tiered skirt of ruffles in green, flamingo pink, and magenta, accompanied by silver platform sandals, is a nod to Rachel Zegler's character, Lucy Gray Baird, in "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes."
On "The Today Show," Grace wore an aqua Betsey Johnson minidress. This ensemble was a modernized take on the puff-sleeve dress worn by Amandla Stenberg as Rue in the original 2012 film, "The Hunger Games." Grace even matched Stenberg's hairstyle by wearing twin butterfly clips.
Earlier in the press tour, at the Newport Beach Film Festival Honors and Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch event, Grace wore a tea-length strapless Nicole + Felicia dress adorned with delicate silk butterfly appliqués. This motif pays tribute to a specific scene in "Sunrise on the Reaping."
For the Academy Museum Gala, Grace referenced Jennifer Lawrence's real-life fashion choices. She wore a Mônot halter dress with a plunging neckline, reminiscent of Lawrence's memorable red Calvin Klein gown from the 2011 Oscars.
Her press tour began in Paris at the opening of an exhibition on Panem's style, where she wore a white strapless Monique Lhuillier gown. The dress featured an ornate crystal structure and was inspired by Katniss Everdeen's wedding dress from "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."
In Sydney, Australia, for a photo call, Grace appeared in a ballet pink, one-shoulder House of Gilles gown with a matching bow and floral hairpiece. A side braid in her hair was a subtle reference to Katniss Everdeen.
Each of Grace's fashion choices has been deliberate, weaving elements of the "Hunger Games" saga into her public appearances as the film's release on November 20 approaches.
