Matthieu Blazy Reimagines Chanel for Spring/Summer 2027

Chanel’s artistic director Matthieu Blazy presented his spring-summer 2027 collection at Paris Fashion Week, showcasing a blend of sportswear influences and evening wear that aims to make the historic fashion house feel newly unpredictable.

The show, attended by celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Dua Lipa, and Pedro Pascal, marked a year into Blazy’s tenure. He succeeded Virginie Viard, who took over following the death of Karl Lagerfeld in 2019. While Viard’s leadership saw record sales, Blazy’s contributions have focused on reintroducing an element of surprise to Chanel’s familiar aesthetic.

Blazy’s approach revisits the house’s iconic symbols, reimagining tweed to be stretchable, formal jackets to be worn against bare skin, and quilted bags to adopt a more relaxed, slouchy silhouette. This strategy aims to offer established clients recognizable pieces while providing newer audiences with elements that can be reinterpreted.

Beneath illuminated birds at the Grand Palais, the collection explored Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s evolution from Edwardian constraints toward greater freedom in dress. Blazy described the collection's theme as "the women within a woman."

The 83-look collection expanded the traditional Chanel wardrobe to include body-skimming knits, masculine tailoring, airy eveningwear, and sharply abbreviated skirts. Raw-edged waistcoats and narrow skirt suits offered reworkings of men’s formal attire, while a pearl-embroidered corset top paired with black trousers highlighted the interplay between restriction and ease.

Elements reminiscent of older fashions, such as ruffled collars, peplums, and traces of corset boning, also appeared. A key development was Chanel’s new “smocked tweed,” designed with an athleticwear-like stretch and ease, preserving the fabric’s character while enhancing its wearability.

Dresses crafted from layered, printed silk translated cloud formations and shifting light into vibrant patterns. Model Dyanira Hurbuscher opened and closed the show, carrying Gabrielle Chanel’s original 2.55 handbag, a piece on loan from the house’s archives. This detail underscored the collection's central theme of continuity and evolution.

Blazy’s revitalization of Chanel is characterized by his ability to make the brand’s heritage feel accessible for creative exploration, supported by meticulous work in the ateliers. Lipa was observed wearing a sleeveless skirt suit with pink heels, and Kidman attended the event with her daughter, Faith Margaret.
