Matthew Rhys Wins Best Actor at Bafta Cymru Awards

Matthew Rhys has been awarded Best Actor at the Bafta Cymru Awards for his performance in the Netflix thriller "The Beast in Me." This recognition follows a significant awards season for the actor, who recently made history by becoming the first person to win two lead acting prizes in a single night at the Emmy Awards.

The ceremony, held at the ICC Wales in Newport, saw Rhys receive his second Bafta Cymru award. His first win was 29 years ago for his role in the Welsh-language film "Bydd yn Wro," or "Be Brave."

Other notable wins included Gabrielle Creevy taking home her second Best Actress award. The documentary "Y Crwydryn" received the Single Documentary award, with Rhys Edwards winning Director Factual for the same production. Mari Grug won her first Bafta Cymru award for presenter in "Mari Grug: Yn dydd Ar Y Tro."

"Y Golau: Dwr" secured two awards during the evening. Matthew Barry was recognized as Best Writer for "The Guest." The Entertainment Programme award went to "Amour a Mynydd," and "Stori'r Iaith" received the Factual Series award.

In the film categories, "Burton" won the Feature/Television Film award. The Short Film award was presented to "Gofod Ymennydd – Brain Space," and "Itopia" took home the award for Children's Programme.

In total, 17 awards were presented, alongside two Bafta Outstanding Contribution awards. Bafta Cymru chair Lee Walters had previously congratulated the nominees, stating that each award was a testament to the creativity, skill, and dedication of individuals working across Wales' screen industries.
