Mathematician Hannah Fry Uses Alan Turing's Methods to Crack 'Celebrity Traitors'
Fry, known for her work in mathematics and data analysis, is applying historical code-breaking techniques to identify 'traitors' in the reality competition show.
Mathematician Hannah Fry is drawing inspiration from the pioneering work of Alan Turing as she competes in the new series of Celebrity Traitors. Fry, who has analyzed data from previous seasons, believes she can identify patterns in the behavior of the show's 'traitors' using similar mathematical thinking to that which Turing employed to crack the Enigma code.
"Have I gone back through the data of all the previous games and tried to find statistically significant patterns? Yes! There is a pattern in the way that Traitors behave," Fry stated. She pointed to specific behaviors, such as a traitor voting for someone nobody else has, as an example of a pattern she has observed. However, Fry noted that the 'faithfuls' in the game are often disorganized, making it challenging to discern clear signals.
Fry admitted that while she has been meticulously analyzing data, her biggest challenge may be managing her own competitive nature. "I would say I am toxically competitive. Yes, to a fault. I have to try and rein that in," she said. She expressed a preference for being a faithful, believing it would allow her to enjoy the experience more authentically.
The new series of Celebrity Traitors began airing on October 1 at 8 p.m. The show features a cast including Amol Rajan, Bella Ramsey, James Acaster, James Blunt, Jerry Hall, Joanne McNally, Joe Lycett, Julie Hesmondhalgh, King Kenny, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, among others. Maya Jama, Michael Sheen, Miranda Hart, Myha'la, Professor Hannah Fry, Richard E. Grant, Rob Beckett, Romesh Ranganathan, Ross Kemp, Sebastian Croft, and Sharon Rooney also comprise the lineup.
Contestants are competing in the Scottish Highlands in a game of detection, trust, and betrayal, aiming to win up to £100,000 for charity. The announcement of Fry's participation comes shortly before the launch of her first-ever UK tour, titled 'Come Fry With Me,' scheduled for next autumn. Some fans speculate that the timing of her tour, which follows the show's airing, might hint at her success on the series and a potential increase in her public profile, similar to that of last year's winner Alan Carr.
