Madonna Sweeps 2026 MTV VMAs with Artist of the Year Win
The music icon took home seven awards after delivering a show-stopping opening performance.
Madonna was the dominant force at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, securing Artist of the Year and six other accolades during the ceremony held at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Madonna opened the show with performances of "Bring Your Love" alongside Sabrina Carpenter and "Danceteria" with Charli XCX. The performance, which featured guest appearances from Julia Garner, Sombr, Debi Mazar, and Seth Rogen, marked her first VMA performance in 23 years. While some viewers on X criticized the performance, citing lip-syncing and awkward moves, many others expressed admiration for the artist, calling it "insane" and praising her continued ability to amaze.
Beyond her opening, Madonna's wins included Best Collaboration for "Bring Your Love" with Carpenter, and Best Dance for "Confessions II - The Film." During her acceptance speech for Artist of the Year, Madonna reflected on her career, referencing her first VMA performance of "Like A Virgin" in 1984 and sharing a humorous anecdote about an accidental wardrobe malfunction during an early performance. She encouraged attendees to find themselves and believe in themselves, stating, "that really is the definition of being an artist."
Taylor Swift also had a significant night, winning Video of the Year for her self-written and directed music video "The Fate of Ophelia." Swift also received the inaugural Artist Director Honors, presented by Dakota Johnson, and won Best Direction for "Opalite." She dedicated her Video of the Year win to the recently deceased country icon Dolly Parton.
Kacey Musgraves delivered a tribute to Parton, performing "I Will Always Love You" while channeling the late singer's iconic style. Parton passed away on August 25 at the age of 80.
The 2026 VMAs also recognized Nirvana with the Video Vanguard Award. Other award recipients included Sienna Spiro for Best New Artist and Lisa for Best Pop Award.
The ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg, also featured performances by artists such as Lisa, Sienna Spiro, Bruno Mars, Sombr, and Shaboozey.
