The music icon kicked off the awards show for a record fifth time, joined by a surprise ensemble of artists and actors.
Madonna opened the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with a performance that included a series of surprise guests, marking her fifth time opening the ceremony. The 68-year-old artist was joined on stage by Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Sombr, and her longtime friend Debi Mazar.
Additionally, Madonna brought out actor Seth Rogen and actress Julia Garner, who had been slated to portray the singer in a previously planned biopic. The appearance of Rogen, in particular, drew significant reactions on social media.
Madonna's VMAs performances have a history of notable moments, including her 2003 opening with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. This year's performance comes as Madonna is nominated for 11 awards, including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Video of the Year.
Taylor Swift follows with nine nominations, including for the new MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, an award recognizing artists for their visual storytelling in music videos.
