Madonna Breaks Silence on Widely Criticized MTV VMAs Performance
The pop icon posted behind-the-scenes photos and a cryptic message on social media after her performance drew mixed reactions.
Madonna has addressed her MTV VMAs 2026 performance, which drew criticism from some viewers who described it as "unfocused" and "confused." The 68-year-old artist took to Instagram to share a series of behind-the-scenes images from the event, opting to acknowledge her success rather than the negative feedback.
"Landed on The Moon and it Feels So Good!" Madonna wrote, accompanied by a rocket ship emoji. "Thank you to an incredible team of hardworking people who helped me realize my Vision! I did it all for Love.!!!!!" she added, using seven trophy emojis to represent her seven wins at the ceremony and tagging collaborators including Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx, Seth Rogen, Debi Mazar, and Julia Garner.
Madonna's appearance marked her return to the VMAs stage, 23 years after her memorable kiss with Britney Spears. She performed a medley of songs, including her hit "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter, 27. The performance featured elaborate visuals and choreography, with Madonna appearing in a black satin trench coat, a red leotard, and knee-high boots.
Despite the spectacle, some viewers expressed disappointment, with many taking to social media to comment on her perceived breathlessness and accuse her of lip-syncing. The ceremony itself faced criticism for a delay due to an overrunning football game, which impacted the broadcast timing.
"MTV & CBS really fumbled Madonna tonight," one user wrote. "The delay was bad enough, but those HORRIBLE camera angles during her performance? Come on. She deserved so much better."
Another commenter stated, "I wish I could’ve seen Madonna in her prime! Mama is TIRED and out of breath on this MTV #VMAs stage. And yes, I know she’s almost 70, so I’m not expecting 1985 Madonna, but whew!"
Others defended the artist, praising her energy and stage presence at 68. "She's 68, bravo to her for still being able to get up on stage and move it the way she did," one fan commented.
Later in the evening, Madonna accepted the award for Best Dance for "Confessions II - The Film" alongside Charli xcx and Troye Sivan. Her acceptance speech took an unusual turn when she stated, "I'm kind of unclear as to what this award is for?" before making a jest about a laser being "stuck up my a**."
Madonna and Carpenter also won best collaboration for "Bring Your Love," marking Madonna's first VMA win in this category since 1999. The Queen of Pop's VMAs success continued as she secured Artist of the Year, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, Best Long Form Video, and Best Album, bringing her total to seven awards. Her latest album, "Confessions II," released in July, has been met with critical acclaim and fan adoration.
