Loyalty's Double Edge Explored in 'MobLand' Season 2, Episode 4
The latest installment delves into the morally complex nature of loyalty through the character of Harry and the intertwining fates of the Harrigan crime family.

In the latest episode of "MobLand," titled "Blank Curtain," the series examines the paradoxical nature of loyalty, particularly through the actions and history of the character Harry. Conrad Harrigan recounts a story to Gina Da Souza that highlights Harry’s unwavering, almost brutal, dedication. Harry's past as a soldier and mercenary, where he witnessed extreme brutality, shaped him into a figure capable of extreme loyalty, a trait that proves to be both his greatest asset and his most dangerous flaw.
Tom Hardy's portrayal of Harry underscores this duality. His casual demeanor and laid-back speech patterns can be both calming and unsettling, capable of deflating tense situations or amplifying fear, regardless of whether he is saving a life or ending one. This characteristic, endearing in some contexts, becomes repellent when associated with horrific acts, such as orchestrating the "suicide" of Detective Finch.
Finch learns a harsh lesson about the Harrigans: involvement with them means one's life becomes contingent on their utility. Once Finch is out of the loop of the organized crime task force, Harry perceives his usefulness has ended. This transactional view of life is further illustrated with Seraphina, who confesses her role as an inside informant for Kat McAllister. While Harry spares her, offering her a chance to act as a double agent, the implication remains that her fate, like Finch's, is precarious.
The episode introduces the concept of Wilhoit’s Law, positing that conservatism functions on a principle of in-groups protected by law and out-groups bound by it. This dynamic is mirrored in the criminal world, where "might makes right." Harry's antagonist, Frankie Cooper, understands this, targeting Harry's family, his personal life, to inflict maximum damage. The episode concludes with Frankie sending Harry a video of his estranged wife with another man, filmed by Frankie himself, emphasizing the vulnerability of Harry's true family.
Amidst the complex loyalties and betrayals within the Harrigan family, questions arise about the true meaning of loyalty. Bella criticizes Kevin, Conrad declares war on him, and Seraphina's betrayal is revealed. Maeve's own schemes, including plans to harm Eddie and push for Harry's death, further fracture the family. Harry himself becomes an unwitting accomplice to Conrad's violent acts.
The score by Clint Mansell amplifies the emotional weight of these dynamics, juxtaposing the often-gratuitous violence with the painful interpersonal conflicts. "MobLand" challenges the audience's enjoyment of gangster narratives by exposing the callous behavior and betrayals that underpin them, prompting reflection on the nature of honest versus dishonest killers and our perception of such distinctions.
