Louise Erdrich, the acclaimed novelist and proprietor of Birchbark Books, has been named the recipient of the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, one of the nation's most significant honors for artists. The prize recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to the arts and for enhancing the public's enjoyment and understanding of life.
Erdrich, 72, is a Pulitzer Prize winner for her 2020 novel “The Night Watchman” and a National Book Award winner for her 2012 novel “The Round House.” She also received the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction in 2015.
The Gish Prize, established in 1994, is named for silent film stars Dorothy and Lillian Gish. Past recipients include artists such as Bob Dylan, Frank Gehry, Merce Cunningham, and Ava DuVernay.
Upon learning of the award, Erdrich reflected on the collaborative nature of creative endeavors, drawing a parallel between filmmaking and the book industry.
