Lily Allen: Music Industry Unprepared for Older Female Artists

Singer Lily Allen has stated that the music industry is ill-equipped to market women of a certain age, including herself. The 41-year-old artist expressed that the business appears hesitant to support female artists discussing relatable, mature themes such as perimenopause and the demands of daily life.

Allen told The Times Magazine that the industry's apprehension stems from a lack of perceived marketability for these subjects. "We're scared of going there because there's not much evidence there's a market for it. But there probably is," she commented. She also noted that her recent work has resonated significantly with women in her age group, suggesting that addressing "real things" can be successful.

This perspective follows comments from her ex-husband, David Harbour, regarding Allen's album "West End Girl," which touches on their marriage breakdown. Harbour, 51, acknowledged Allen's artistic freedom to use personal experiences but stated he did not share the same perspective on their relationship.

Allen responded to Harbour's remarks in an interview with The Cut, characterizing his opinion as "generous" and praising his acting career. "He's having a real moment of success as well, right?" she said. "We're all doing our own thing, and we're all doing what we're supposed to do. If there's one thing I know about David Harbour, it's that he's an excellent actor."

Harbour had previously shared his thoughts on the album with Variety in June, describing it as "weird." He stated, "I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that. I can't really say that much more, because it's my private life... In spite of the fact that a lot of people don't allow me a private life — I value it. And I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won't speak about that. Stories are complex, and that's why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn't my experience."

"West End Girl," an album written in ten days last December, is described by Allen as a blend of fact and fiction, advising fans not to interpret the lyrics as literal truth. The song "Madeline" notably accuses Harbour of a three-year affair with a costume designer, hinting at an open relationship agreement contingent on discretion and lack of emotional attachment.

Another track, "Tennis," uses tennis as a metaphor for sexual activity, with lyrics questioning infidelity and introducing the name "Madeline." The song concludes with repeated inquiries about Madeline's identity.

Allen and Harbour met on the dating app Raya and married in Las Vegas in 2020. They legally separated in early 2025 after four years of marriage, with divorce proceedings commencing shortly thereafter. Allen was previously married to Sam Cooper from 2011 to 2018.
