Lena Dunham Announces 'Girls' Reboot, Cast Set to Return

Lena Dunham has announced that her generation-defining HBO series "Girls" is officially returning to television. The reboot comes exactly a decade after the show's final season aired in 2017. Original cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells are confirmed to return, along with executive producer Judd Apatow.

Dunham, who created and starred in the series as aspiring writer Hannah Horvath, stated that the creative team only considered a return if there was a compelling story to tell. "We always said we would only return to 'Girls' if there was a specific story we were burning to tell," Dunham said in a statement. "I've missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn't quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it's pretty hard to get them to stop."

"Girls" premiered on HBO in 2012, capturing the realities of millennial womanhood in New York City and quickly becoming a phenomenon. The series, which documented the trials and tribulations of 20-somethings Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna, earned 19 Emmy nominations and two wins during its run. It was later ranked as one of the greatest television shows of all time.

Since the show's conclusion, the cast has pursued diverse career paths.

Lena Dunham, now 40, has continued her work as a writer and director, helming episodes for shows like "Camping" and "Industry." She also wrote and directed the feature films "Sharp Stick" and "Catherine Called Birdy," and created the Netflix romcom "Too Much." Her second memoir, "Famesick," was released in April. Dunham married musician Luis Felber in 2021 and they welcomed a daughter via surrogacy this year.

Allison Williams, 38, who played Hannah's best friend Marnie Michaels, launched a successful film career. She starred in Jordan Peele's acclaimed horror film "Get Out" and later produced and starred in the hit horror "M3GAN." Her television credits include "A Series of Unfortunate Events" and the Showtime miniseries "Fellow Travelers." She recently starred in the romantic drama "Regretting You" and quietly married actor Alexander Dreymon in 2023, with whom she welcomed a son in 2021.

Jemima Kirke, 41, who portrayed the free-spirited Jessa Johansson, appeared in the Netflix miniseries "Manic" alongside Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. She also had a role in "Sex Education" and the BBC adaptation "Conversations with Friends." Kirke has two children from a previous relationship.

Zosia Mamet, 38, known for her role as the quirky Shoshanna Shapiro, collaborated with Kaley Cuoco on the comedy series "The Flight Attendant." She also had a guest spot on "Harley Quinn" and appeared in "Madame Web" and "The Decameron." Mamet has been married to actor Evan Jonigkeit since 2016.

Adam Driver, 42, who played Hannah's polarizing love interest Adam Sackler, has become one of Hollywood's most sought-after actors. He gained widespread recognition for his roles in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy and critical acclaim for films like "BlacKkKlansman" and "Marriage Story," earning Oscar and BAFTA nominations for the latter two. He has continued his collaboration with director Ridley Scott on "The Last Duel," "House of Gucci," and "Ferrari," and recently starred in "Paper Tiger." Driver is slated to play Mister Sinister in an untitled X-Men reboot scheduled for 2028. He married his longtime partner Joanne Tucker in 2013 and they have two children.

Alex Karpovsky, 51, who played Ray Ploshansky, has since appeared in "Homecoming," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and the Peacock miniseries "Angelyne." He recently joined the cast of the comedy series "Nobody Wants This." Karpovsky has also focused on directing and producing podcast thrillers.

Andrew Rannells, 48, as Elijah Krantz, has had roles in feature films such as "A Simple Favor" and its upcoming sequel, as well as Ryan Murphy productions "The Boys in the Band" and "The Prom." He reunited with Dunham on her Netflix series "Too Much," reprising his role as her character's ex-partner. Rannells has also lent his voice to "Big Mouth" and appeared in "Black Monday" and "Welcome to Chippendales." He has been in a relationship with actor Tuc Watkins since 2019.
