Laika's 'Wildwood' Animated Film Opens in Theaters, Streaming Release Unclear
The stop-motion fantasy film directed by Travis Knight is now playing in U.S. cinemas, with no immediate streaming or digital release announced.
The new stop-motion animated film "Wildwood," from Laika, the studio behind "Coraline" and "ParaNorman," is now available in movie theaters across the United States.
Directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler, the film is an adaptation of Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis's 2011 novel of the same name. It follows a teenage girl named Prue, voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, who ventures into an enchanted forest with her friend Curtis (voiced by Jacob Tremblay) to rescue her baby brother from crows. The voice cast also features Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, and Richard E. Grant, among others.
"Wildwood" opened in U.S. theaters on Friday, October 23. Information on showtimes can be found via Fandango. The film is currently only accessible in cinemas and is not yet available for online streaming or digital purchase.
While "Wildwood" is not a Netflix original, it is possible it could eventually stream on the platform after its theatrical run concludes. As an independent film distributed by Fathom Entertainment, its streaming future is not tied to a specific service. The movie is also not expected to be available for free with a Prime Video subscription in the near future.
Owners of the film may eventually be able to buy or rent "Wildwood" on digital platforms. Industry trends suggest this could occur approximately one to two months after its theatrical debut, likely around early December 2026. However, Fathom Entertainment has not announced any streaming deals for subscription-based services.
Past Laika productions, such as "Coraline," "ParaNorman," and "The Boxtrolls," are currently available on HBO Max. This precedent suggests that "Wildwood" might eventually find a home on HBO Max, potentially by late February or early March 2027, assuming a four-month window from its theatrical release. Subscriptions to HBO Max start at $10.99 per month with ads, while an ad-free option costs $18.49 per month. Discounted Disney+ Bundles including Hulu and HBO Max are also available.
For audiences eager to see "Wildwood," attending a theatrical screening remains the only immediate option.
