New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson made his acting debut on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" as Detective Madison in an episode that aired Thursday. Brunson's character provided Captain Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, with a key piece of evidence that helped advance her investigation.
In the episode titled "Forsaken," Brunson's Detective Madison encountered Benson at a restaurant. He described a recent traffic stop involving a man named Rick and his teenage son, Tyler. Rick had a blood-alcohol content of .25 and was driving with Tyler. Madison confiscated a pocket knife from the father but initially let go of a metal bar keychain accessory found on the son, deeming it a "legal gray area."
However, this detail proved critical. Earlier in the episode, the victim, Chloe, had described her attacker using a similar metal bar, identified as a kubaton. Benson used this information to obtain a warrant to search the family's apartment, where they found a kubaton with Tyler's fingerprints. The discovery led to Tyler's arrest.
Brunson's father, Rick Brunson, who is an assistant coach for the Knicks, also made a brief cameo in the scene as a different character, a father stopped for a DUI. This cameo marked an expansion of Brunson's media appearances, following his hosting gig on "Saturday Night Live" earlier in the year.
Brunson described the experience as "really fun" and noted his existing relationship with Hargitay, a noted Knicks fan who frequently attends games at Madison Square Garden. The actor's appearance lasted approximately one minute, approximately 20 minutes into the episode.
