Kevin McCloud Embarks on a Riviera Road Trip in Classic Cars
The television presenter explores the French countryside and iconic vehicles in a new series.
Kevin McCloud's latest television venture, "Classic Car Road Trips," sees the presenter exploring scenic locations in iconic vehicles. In the first episode, McCloud journeyed through the French Riviera, a setting he described as idyllic.
McCloud was behind the wheel of a Citroen DS, a convertible model once lauded as the most beautiful car of the 20th century. "It really feels as if you're driving a piece of sculpture around," he remarked. He noted the car's distinctive features, including a gear lever on the steering wheel and adjustable suspension, and observed that the vehicle seemed to "float on the breeze."
The production encountered an initial hiccup when the Citroen broke down en route from Monaco to Cannes, requiring repairs. Mechanic Lionel Aubert oversaw the fix, and McCloud received a brief tutorial on operating the vintage car, including navigating its unique controls and remembering to drive on the correct side of the road.
Beyond the driving experience, the program incorporated local culture and activities. McCloud stopped in the village of Biot to play a game involving wooden cubes, visited design students interested in old technology, and explored a restaurant featuring a private art collection. He also tested the car's suspension by driving over a cobbled street while carefully sipping coffee, demonstrating the vehicle's smooth ride.
