K-pop Star Nana Apologizes for Lip Filler Backlash in Netflix Drama

K-pop star Nana has issued an apology after her lip fillers drew criticism from fans during her role in the Netflix historical drama "The Scandal."

The 35-year-old, whose real name is Im Jin-a, portrayed a Joseon-era widow in the series, but her appearance, specifically her lips, became a focal point of discussion.

Fans commented that her fuller-looking lips detracted from the historical authenticity of her character and the period setting. In response to the backlash, Nana took to the subscription app Bubble to address the concerns.

"If my lips made viewers uncomfortable, then that was my fault," Nana wrote. "I think it was a personal choice that wasn't the right one for me as an actor." She added that she was sorry to see her fans hurt by the harsh criticism directed at her and vowed to "do my best so that we can hear more positive things together."

Nana first gained fame as a member of the K-pop girl group After School before embarking on a solo music career and later transitioning to acting. Her acting credits include the TV series "Kill It" and "Justice," as well as the Netflix series "Glitch."

"The Scandal," which premiered on Netflix on September 18, is an eight-part series that offers a reimagining of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 18th-century French novel "Dangerous Liaisons." The show has achieved popularity, ranking seventh on Netflix's Top 10 list of non-English TV shows.

This controversy follows an incident nearly a year ago when Nana and her mother reportedly subdued an armed robber who broke into their home in Seoul. During the confrontation, Nana's mother lost consciousness and required medical attention, while Nana also sustained injuries. Her agency at the time described the situation as dangerous, with both individuals needing treatment and rest.
