Justin Timberlake Debunks Britney Spears Rumors About 'What Goes Around... Comes Around'

Justin Timberlake has officially addressed long-standing rumors that his 2006 song "What Goes Around... Comes Around" was written about his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears. In a recent interview with Complex's Re-Rank, Timberlake stated the song was actually inspired by a personal heartbreak story shared with him by a close friend.

"It's not a personal story from mine. It's actually a personal story from a friend's that I asked permission to," Timberlake told host Jordan Rose. He explained that his friend was going through a difficult time, and upon hearing the story, Timberlake asked if he could write about it. His friend's response, "Yeah, torch that b***h, what goes around, comes around!" inspired the song's title and theme. Timberlake added that he wrote the song in approximately 20 minutes.

The track, released as part of his album FutureLove/SexSounds, has often been compared to his 2002 hit "Cry Me a River," which many believe was inspired by his breakup with Spears. In his 2018 book, Hindsight: & All the Things I Can’t See in Front of Me, Timberlake described writing "Cry Me a River" in two hours after feeling "scorned" and "pissed off," though he did not name Spears.

Spears, in her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, wrote about instances where she believed Timberlake had been unfaithful during their relationship, which lasted from 1999 to 2002. She also detailed a moment where she kissed choreographer Wade Robson, but stated it occurred only after she learned of Timberlake's infidelity.

In February 2024, Spears posted an apology on Instagram for "some of the things I wrote about in my book," adding that she was a fan of Timberlake's new song "Selfish." This came after Timberlake, during a concert in January 2024, seemingly responded to the memoir's claims by telling the crowd, "I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely f***ing nobody," before performing "Cry Me a River."

Timberlake married actress Jessica Biel in 2012 and they have two sons. Spears has been married three times and most recently divorced Sam Asghari in 2024.
