Judith Lucy Shares Update After Double Mastectomy, Calls Lymph Node News 'Winning the Cancer Lottery'
The Australian comedian posted a photo of her chest and shared her feelings about the procedure, noting the positive outcome regarding her lymph nodes.
Australian comedian Judith Lucy has shared an update following her double mastectomy to treat breast cancer, describing the experience as "super weird" but expressing gratitude that cancer was not found in her lymph nodes.
Lucy, 58, posted an image of her chest on Instagram Tuesday, revealing she was out of the hospital and comparing the experience to a long-haul flight. "Admittedly when you land at Heathrow you do generally still have both your breasts. Anyway, FINALLY my ballet career can begin!" she joked.
She shared the positive news that her lymph nodes appeared clear of cancer. "I'm not going to pretend that no longer having melons isn't super weird but it looks like it's not in my nodes which, as a friend who has dealt way too much with breast cancer said, 'is like winning the cancer lottery'," Lucy wrote. She added, "I'm not exactly at the point where I'm viewing this all as 'a gift' but I'm so grateful it was caught so early."
Lucy had previously discussed her decision not to undergo breast reconstruction, anticipating that not having her breasts would be a "shock" and require an overhaul of her wardrobe. "I love my ladies," she told ABC Melbourne radio last week. "I think if I were younger I would make a different decision, but I know the recovery time will be a lot less. I think I'm pretty happy with that decision."
Earlier this month, Lucy shared a hospital photo capturing the moment she learned she needed the mastectomy following her diagnosis. With a cheeky caption, "Fun with cancer!", she thanked fans for their support and urged women to prioritize regular mammograms and self-examinations. "Again (and as Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close) whether it's a mammogram or self-examination, check those sweater puppies out!" she wrote.
