Jorja Smith Honored at Independent Music Awards
The singer received the award for best independent track for her song 'The Way I Love You.'
Jorja Smith was recognized at the annual Independent Music Awards for her song "The Way I Love You," taking home the award for best independent track. The ceremony, held Tuesday night at London's Roundhouse, celebrates unsigned artists and independent record labels.
Accepting the award, Smith expressed gratitude for her musical journey and acknowledged the achievements of fellow independent artists. "Everyone should be so proud," the Walsall singer stated, emphasizing the accomplishments of those working independently. "I'm just very grateful," she added, reflecting on her ability to create music since childhood. "I can't believe I've been able to just have this space to create, the same way I've been doing since I was like, 11."
Other artists recognized at the event included Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn, whose album "Sexistential" was named best independent album. Pauline Black, a notable figure in the 2-Tone ska movement, received the outstanding contribution to music award. Jalen Ngonda, a musician influenced by Motown, was honored as best breakthrough act, while Jim Legxacy won best EP for "black British music."
