Johnny Depp's 'Ebenezer' Trailer Sparks Debate Over Classic Tale's Return

Johnny Depp's return to major Hollywood studio films in the upcoming adaptation "Ebenezer" has generated a significant reaction following the release of its trailer. The actor's transformation into Ebenezer Scrooge has drawn praise from fans eager to see his comeback, while others are questioning the film's tagline, "Think you know his story? Think again."

Social media users have expressed confusion over the marketing, with many pointing out that the trailer appears to be faithful to Charles Dickens' original story. "From the trailer I can confirm, its still the same story," one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "It's the same as Scrooge, and Muppets Christmas Carol. So dw about having to think again, you really don't."

Another commenter questioned, "Why is the tagline 'Think you know his story? Think again.' when every single thing in the trailers is faithful to Dickens? That is his story and we all know it."

Despite the skepticism regarding the film's messaging, many fans are enthusiastic about seeing Depp's interpretation of the classic character. "So many have done this story and I still will watch it," one user commented. Excitement for "Ebenezer" signals a potential Hollywood comeback for Depp, whose last major studio film was in 2023's French historical drama "Jeanne du Barry." He also directed "Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness" and is slated to appear in the thriller "Day Drinker" alongside Penélope Cruz.

Fans have expressed optimism about Depp's return to the forefront of cinema. "This looks so awesome, im glad Johnny Depp is back in action..." one user wrote. Another added, "Depp is back at the top of his game!"

Depp's career has seen significant ups and downs. His early work includes a role in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984) and a starring turn on the television series "21 Jump Street." His collaboration with Tim Burton on "Edward Scissorhands" in 1990 marked a pivotal moment, followed by his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. He later received Oscar nominations for "Finding Neverland" and "Sweeney Todd," securing a Golden Globe for the latter.

However, Depp's career faced challenges in recent years, compounded by box-office disappointments, personal issues, and a highly publicized legal battle with his former wife, Amber Heard. In 2020, he lost a U.K. libel case against The Sun newspaper. This was followed by a defamation trial in Virginia in 2022, where a jury found Heard liable for defaming Depp in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed.
