Dame Joan Collins, who portrayed the formidable Alexis Colby in the 1980s soap opera "Dynasty," believes the character would be received very differently if the show were to be broadcast today. Collins, 93, stated in a recent podcast appearance that while audiences embraced the character in the 1980s, a modern-day audience might react with significant negativity.

"I'd get so much hate mail," Collins remarked on the launch episode of Shooting Star Children's Hospice's podcast, "Shooting Star Unwrapped." She described Alexis Colby as a woman "ahead of her time"—someone who knew precisely what she desired and pursued it regardless of the collateral damage.

Despite acknowledging that Alexis was "not quite a perfect person," Collins expressed fondness for the character, noting that many viewers disliked her even during the show's original run. However, she anticipates that contemporary viewers might find the character's ruthless ambition and methods less palatable in 2026.

Collins also shared personal insights during the podcast interview, discussing her marriage to producer Percy Gibson. The couple met in 2000 while working on a production of "Love Letters" in San Francisco and married in 2002. Reflecting on their relationship, which has spanned over two decades, Collins emphasized the importance of liking one's partner beyond initial attraction. She described their marriage as "pretty solid," attributing its longevity to mutual affection and companionship, despite occasional disagreements.

Collins has donated a Valentino minaudière, described as a shell-shaped handbag gifted to her by the designer himself, to be auctioned through the charity's Virtual Charity Shop. "Shooting Star Unwrapped" features other celebrities such as Brenda Blethyn OBE, Tony Hadley MBE, Philip Glenister MBE, and Michael Ball, who have also contributed items for auction. The podcast is available on major platforms, with new episodes released bi-weekly.
