Jessica Lange Hints at Acting Retirement, Cites Lack of Quality Roles
The 77-year-old Oscar winner expressed a feeling of being 'at an end' in her career, citing challenges in finding compelling projects.
Veteran actress Jessica Lange, 77, has indicated that she may be nearing the end of her acting career, citing a scarcity of quality roles. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lange stated, “I actually feel like I’m coming to an end,” adding that it “doesn’t seem easy to get things made anymore. At least not the kind of films that interest me.”
Lange, who has earned two Academy Awards among numerous other accolades, reflected on her extensive career with gratitude. "I’ve been incredibly lucky. I love acting, and I’ve had decades of being able to do it, which has been a joy for me," she said. She expressed a desire to be remembered for "some good parts. For some good films. For being an honest actor."
Her most recent film credit was Mary Tyrone in the adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's play "Long Day's Journey Into Night," filmed in 2022 and given a limited release in the U.S. last month. Lange noted that while a couple of projects have been in development for an extended period, their realization remains uncertain.
Lange also recently appeared in the 13th season of "American Horror Story." Earlier this year, she publicly criticized FX, the network behind "American Horror Story," calling it "f–king cheap" for not providing car service for cast members during the filming of Season 3. She recounted having to drive herself and co-stars, including Sarah Paulson and Billie Lourd.
Lange's career began with her film debut in the 1976 remake of "King Kong." Over her career, she has received six Oscar nominations, winning for "Tootsie" (1982) and "Blue Sky" (1994). She has also earned nine Emmy nominations, securing three wins for her roles in "Grey Gardens" (2009) and "American Horror Story: Murder House" (2012) and "American Horror Story: Coven" (2014).
Despite the potential for retirement, Lange expressed deep appreciation for her time in the industry, acknowledging the challenges and adventures that came with balancing family and career. "It all was a great adventure. I’m so grateful that [it] came my way," she stated.
