Marks & Spencer has released its highly anticipated Christmas advertisement, featuring actor James Norton as a bare-chested Santa Claus and Lucy Punch as Mrs. Claus. The ad, which marks the final major department store holiday campaign of the season, has been described as "pitch perfect" and controversy-free.
The three-minute commercial opens with Punch, known for her role in the BBC sitcom "Amandaland," as Mrs. Claus. She suggests Santa, portrayed by Norton, consider losing his beard to appear younger. Initially resistant, Norton's Santa ultimately shaves his beard, transforming into a "super hunk" reminiscent of James Bond, complete with a ripped torso visible as he poses in a towel.
This new persona allows Santa to experience Christmas as an ordinary person. He travels to London, dons a new leather jacket and red scarf, and attends a school concert where singer Katherine Jenkins performs. The soundtrack for the advert is a cover of "Heaven is a Place on Earth," which is also being released as a single.
Norton's Santa then indulges in M&S's party food and visits a local M&S store, expressing wonder at the offerings. The ad concludes with Mrs. Claus admitting she has been shopping at M&S for years, and a thrilled Santa decides to keep his beard off permanently. He is then gifted an Autograph shaving kit.
Unlike previous years where M&S ran separate campaigns for different departments, this year's ad integrates food, fashion, beauty, and homeware under the banner of "the home of Christmas." The retailer aims to tap into the idea that the holiday season is about spending time with loved ones. According to the report, M&S customer research indicated that 81% of people desire a special time with those they love.
The advertisement has been praised for its feel-good nature, offering a departure from ads focusing on disruptive children or strained family dynamics. The report suggests that it aims to leave viewers with a smile and a warm glow, with a humorous note that 100% of female shoppers might want to see a shirtless James Norton on their screens.
