James Acaster's Celebrity Traitors Reveal Defended by Co-Stars
Comedian's decision to out himself as a Traitor on the show is met with praise and understanding from fellow contestants and friends.
James Acaster, a contestant on the reality competition show "Celebrity Traitors," has found himself at the center of a significant television moment after revealing himself as a Traitor. Hours before the episode aired, Acaster was seen at a gym, a distraction from the intense scrutiny that followed.
During the penultimate episode, Acaster voluntarily admitted to being a Traitor at the round table, a move that has drawn both criticism from some viewers and strong defense from his co-stars and peers. Insiders reported that filming was paused after Acaster's confession due to his visible distress, with welfare teams reportedly called in. This unusual turn of events has led to a debate among fans about the strategic implications and fairness of his decision.
One of Acaster's co-stars, actor Michael Sheen, initially questioned Acaster's knowledge of certain plot details, particularly concerning a staged "murder" involving contestant Ross Kemp. Faced with this scrutiny, Acaster chose to confess, stating he had been made a Traitor against his will and that his intention throughout the game was to remain a Faithful and help the other contestants.
Despite some viewers calling his actions a "ruining" of the game just before the finale, many of Acaster's fellow celebrities have come to his defense. Romesh Ranganathan, a friend of ten years, expressed pride in Acaster's unique approach to the game, stating, "He played a truly unique game, which was to accept his role, but to do it in as Faithful, helping a way as he possibly could." Amol Rajan, who was eliminated earlier in the season, described Acaster as "a remarkable soul." Broadcaster Dan Walker defended the gameplay, noting the entertainment value and questioning the faithfuls' own strategies. Richard Osman, a TV producer and writer, suggested that Acaster was seeking an "exit door where he doesn't blow up the whole show," choosing a moment to reveal himself without completely undermining the game's integrity.
Osman elaborated on Acaster's motivations, suggesting he "didn't want to go into that end game" and preferred to confess at that stage to allow Maya Jama and "King Kenny" a chance in the final. He lauded Acaster's actions as "brilliant" and a departure from conventions, acknowledging it as a "hand grenade" for the game but a compelling character study.
Acaster's admission has been described by viewers as an "unprecedented twist in TV history." He told the camera, "I am, reluctantly, a Traitor," adding that a "weight has been lifted off his shoulders." In his exit interview, Acaster revealed that the plan to confess was what sustained him through the experience, helping him to cope with the guilt of deceiving fellow contestants.
"Celebrity Traitors" features Maya Jama, King Kenny, Romesh Ranganathan, James Blunt, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Sebastian Croft competing for a prize pot of £64,500 for charity in the upcoming finale.
