Jacksepticeye Branches Out, Reflects on Internet's Shifting Landscape

Seán McLoughlin, known to millions as YouTuber Jacksepticeye, is expanding his career beyond gaming content into voice acting and film production. McLoughlin, who started uploading videos in 2012, noted the significant changes in the online world since the platform's early days.

McLoughlin has taken on a new role in the video game Hitman, voicing the controversial influencer Finn Colton, also known as Finnvictus. Although the character shares McLoughlin's likeness and voice, he emphasizes that the character is not based on him. This follows a previous collaboration with Hitman's developer, IO Interactive, on their James Bond game 007: First Light.

Earlier this year, McLoughlin was also announced as a producer on an animated movie adaptation of the video game Bloodborne. Addressing initial concerns from some fans, McLoughlin, who has a tattoo of a Hunter's Mark from the game, stated his commitment to ensuring the adaptation accurately captures the game's atmosphere and spirit. He aims to involve individuals who have a deep understanding of the source material in the production.

McLoughlin also shared his thoughts on the evolving video game industry, including the trend towards digital-only releases and the increasing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in development. He expressed a preference for physical games, lamenting the potential loss of the tangible experience. He also voiced opposition to the use of AI in game development, stating it makes collaborations like a potential Fortnite skin unlikely.

Reflecting on the broader internet landscape, McLoughlin described a perceived "rise of anti-communities" and a general increase in online anger and a lack of nuanced discussion. He attributes this shift to broader societal anxieties, making the internet a less "whimsical" space than when he began his online career.

Despite the challenges, McLoughlin continues his annual Thankmas charity event in December, this year supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, aiming to create positive moments amidst current global concerns. He also stated a personal goal to be more mindful about offering opinions on every topic, recognizing the abundance of such discourse online.
