Jack Lowden has stepped into the role of Mr. Darcy in Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." First-look images released by the streaming service show the Scottish actor portraying the wealthy and aloof master of Pemberley.
Lowden, who has been a subject of speculation regarding the next James Bond, offers a rugged interpretation of Darcy, with his open collar, windswept hair, and stern expression marking a departure from previous portrayals. He joins a cast that includes Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Olivia Colman as the excitable Mrs. Bennet.
Corrin, known for her role in "The Crown," appears windswept as Elizabeth Bennet in a burgundy empire-line dress and embroidered gold jacket. Colman beams as Mrs. Bennet, while Rufus Sewell takes on the role of her sardonic husband. The series also features newcomer Hopey Parish as Mary Bennet, Rhea Norwood as Lydia Bennet, and Hollie Avery as Kitty Bennet.
Daryl McCormack is cast as Mr. Bingley, Jamie Demetriou as Mr. Collins, and Louis Partridge as George Wickham. The adaptation is written by Dolly Alderton, author of "Everything I Know About Love," and directed by Euros Lyn, known for his work on "Heartstopper" and "Doctor Who."
Alderton has described Austen's 1813 novel as "the blueprint for romantic comedy" and stated that the series aims to bring the story to the screen in ways that are both familiar and fresh. The six-part drama is scheduled for release on December 3.
Lowden's portrayal of Darcy follows notable performances by Colin Firth in the 1995 BBC adaptation and Matthew Macfadyen in the 2005 film version. Lowden's recent roles include playing MI5 agent River Cartwright in Apple TV's "Slow Horses," which has fueled speculation about his potential casting as the next James Bond. His "Slow Horses" co-star Gary Oldman has publicly supported Lowden for the role.
