Irish Band Kingfishr's Unlikely Anthem Born from Video Game
An indie-folk band's connection to an English football club began with a 15-year-old video game and evolved into a viral terrace anthem.
An unusual bond has formed between Irish indie-folk band Kingfishr and English League One football club Wycombe Wanderers, with a 15-year-old video game serving as the unlikely catalyst.
The connection began when the band started playing FIFA 11, a popular football simulation game, while recording their second album. During their gameplay, they adopted Wycombe Wanderers as their virtual team.
This virtual allegiance eventually led Kingfishr to compose and post a song for the club, an Irish folk-style track with lyrics centered on "the Wycombe wanderer, wandering away." The song gained significant traction on TikTok, amassing over 190,000 views.
Wycombe Wanderers noticed the tribute and responded positively, inviting the band to visit. On Tuesday night, lead singer Eddie Keogh accepted the invitation, attending the club's 4-1 EFL Trophy victory over Bristol Rovers.
Upon arrival at the stadium, Keogh expressed his surprise as the song was played over the tannoy system. He was subsequently invited onto the pitch, where he was presented with a custom Wycombe Wanderers jersey bearing the name 'Kingfishr 1' on the back. The band's journey from a video game to a football club's anthem highlights a unique intersection of music, gaming, and sports culture.
