Inside 'The Traitors' Filming Locations: Ardross Castle, Strathspey Railway, and Fyrish Monument

The popular reality television series, "The Traitors," and its celebrity spin-off have captured audiences with their dramatic twists and scenic backdrops. Filmed primarily in the Scottish Highlands, the show utilizes several distinctive locations that have become intrinsically linked with its success.

Ardross Castle: The Traitors' Lair

Filming for "The Celebrity Traitors" takes place at Ardross Castle, a 19th-century estate situated approximately 30 miles north of Inverness, near the town of Alness. The castle, set within 100 acres of gardens and parkland, was constructed in the Scottish baronial style, characterized by its elaborate architecture, turrets, and battlements. Its origins trace back over 170 years.

The land was originally owned by George Granville Leveson-Gower, the 1st Duke of Sutherland, who maintained a hunting lodge on the site. The duke remains a controversial figure due to his role in the Highland Clearances. A statue of the duke, known locally as "The Mannie," stands on a hilltop north of Ardross, overlooking Golspie, and has been a target of vandalism.

Later, Sir Alexander Matheson, who made his fortune trading in China and was instrumental in building Highland railways, purchased the Ardross estate. He commissioned the castle's construction, which began in 1847 and involved around 400 workers who built 30 rooms and laid out the extensive grounds. Sir Alexander also improved housing for estate workers.

Following Sir Alexander's death, the property was acquired by Charles William Dyson Perrins, whose family was renowned for creating Worcestershire Sauce and producing Royal Worcester porcelain. The Perrins family were regular visitors to Ardross Castle before its sale in the 1930s.

In 1983, the McTaggart family purchased the castle, and they continue to own it today. While not operating as a hotel, Ardross Castle is available as a wedding venue, with its popularity reportedly boosted by its appearances in "The Traitors" franchise. The castle can accommodate up to 41 guests for a two-night stay, and its grounds can be hired for ceremonies and receptions.

The Strathspey Railway: A Scenic Journey

A train has played a role in various episodes of "The Traitors," notably featuring in the finale of "The Celebrity Traitors"' first series. The Strathspey Railway, a volunteer-run heritage line, operates a 10-mile route between Aviemore and Broomhill, via Boat of Garten. This line is part of a former railway that once linked Aviemore with Forres.

The railway maintains a fleet of steam and diesel locomotives, operated by a combination of volunteers and staff. It has been involved in restoration projects, including bringing a 75-year-old steam locomotive back into service. The Strathspey Railway's future was secured by a significant donation from an American benefactor, and it operates trips throughout the year.

Fyrish Monument: A Mock Ruin with a Purpose

An unusual stone landmark, the Fyrish Monument, served as the backdrop for a task in a recent season of "The Traitors." Located near Alness on the summit of Cnoc Fyrish, this folly overlooks the Cromarty Firth. The monument is a popular destination for walkers.

The structure was commissioned by landowner Gen Sir Hector Munro of Novar, who funded its construction with prize money and pensions earned during his service in the British Army in India. The monument is designed to resemble the fortress gates of Negatapam, a town in India where fighting occurred in the 1780s. Local accounts suggest Sir Hector built the folly to create employment, allegedly by rolling boulders downhill to extend the construction period.

The Fyrish Monument is a Category B-listed structure, originally painted white. Other filming locations mentioned include Inverness Airport, where contestants have been seen arriving.

These Scottish Highland locations have become synonymous with "The Traitors," contributing to the show's dramatic atmosphere and visual appeal.
