Sir Ian McKellen is set to take on a novel role, appearing as a hologram in the upcoming play "An Ark." The production, which has already been staged in New York, will have its European premiere in Manchester.

Mckellen, known for his iconic roles in "The Lord of the Rings" and "X-Men" franchises, described the experience as an opportunity for actors to "explore a new way of acting."

"New York has already been impressed with the result. Now it's Manchester's turn," McKellen stated.

The cast also includes West End star Arinze Kene and Rosie Sheehy, recognized for her role in "Guess How Much I Love You."

Sheehy shared her enthusiasm for the project, calling the creation process "a true adventure." She added, "Experimenting with what theatre can be is always a thrill – when the boundaries are being stretched this far it can feel terrifying at times. However, being surrounded by such an extraordinary group of people took away that fear and replaced it with excitement and reward. It felt very good to be part of it all."

Mckellen, who moved to Wigan as a child but maintains ties to his Burnley roots, previously performed at Burnley Youth Theatre in 2019 as part of his 80th birthday tour.

"An Ark" is scheduled to run from March 27 to April 10.
