House of the Dragon Star Sir Simon Russell Beale Reports Cancer Remission

Sir Simon Russell Beale, known for his role as Ser Simon Strong in "House of the Dragon," has revealed that his latest hospital scans indicate no remaining signs of the colon cancer he was diagnosed with last year. The 65-year-old actor underwent intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, over the past few months.

In an update shared this week, Russell Beale told the WhatsOnStage podcast, "The latest scan said there's nothing left [of the cancer] at the moment, but I'm sure that probably won't be the end of the story." He also mentioned having a stoma bag, which he finds inconvenient but hopes will be reversed.

Russell Beale publicly shared his cancer diagnosis in April, after being hospitalized in 2025 due to a blockage in a vein in his gut, which led to the discovery of the cancer. He had previously withdrawn from the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "Titus Andronicus" the previous September, with his departure initially attributed to general ill health.

Describing his initial illness, he stated, "At the beginning, I was very ill, apparently, and I didn't know." He noted the significant concern from his medical siblings upon their arrival at his bedside, recognizing the seriousness of the situation.

Despite the gravity of his diagnosis, Russell Beale explained he did not dwell on the worst-case scenarios. "I didn't sit there thinking, oh my god, this is the end at all," he said. "I just sort of thought, I don't know, I thought they'll deal with it."

He recalled that his sister, a general practitioner, intervened when a consultant expressed concern about his reluctance to receive certain details about his condition. Russell Beale admitted he preferred to focus on what was necessary to navigate his treatment.

In June, he directly asked a consultant about his chances of survival, but was reassured that the cancer was curable. The most upsetting aspect of his illness, he admitted, was having to withdraw from the production of "Titus Andronicus."

Regarding his chemotherapy, Russell Beale reported being fortunate to avoid many severe side effects. His treatment involved fortnightly cycles, leaving him feeling unwell for only a couple of days at a time. In August, he told The Times he felt "fine" and "normal" as he approached the end of his chemotherapy regimen.

He has since begun a gradual return to performing. Initially, he narrated a puppet production of Shakespeare's "Venus And Adonis" while still undergoing treatment, a role suited to his recovery as it allowed him to remain seated. He is now performing in "I'll Be Seeing You" at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, playing Liberace, marking a return to more physically demanding stage work.
