Hollywood Veterans Slam David Ellison's Skydance Rebranding of Warner Bros. and Paramount
Industry insiders call the decision to rename the merged studios 'painful' and a 'gut punch,' questioning the choice of a name with no historical ties.
The recent rebranding of the merged Warner Bros. and Paramount studios to Skydance, the name of David Ellison's existing production company, has drawn sharp criticism from Hollywood veterans and investors. Insiders described the move as a "gut punch" and "painful," arguing that it discards decades of valuable brand recognition.
"He's throwing the baby out with the bathwater," one major Paramount investor stated, expressing dismay. "Skydance doesn't mean anything to anyone." Another producer with long-standing ties to Warner Bros. echoed this sentiment, suggesting the choice makes the studio seem like a "tech company" and called Ellison's announcement on X, his first post on the platform, "tacky."
On the Warner Bros. lot, the name change reportedly generated significant outrage, overshadowing concerns about potential layoffs. One executive compared the decision unfavorably to actions taken by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, referencing his 2023 rebranding of the company's streaming platform from HBO Max to "Max." That move, which dropped the "HBO" moniker, was intended to signal broad appeal but was later reversed when the company reverted to HBO Max, acknowledging the strong association of "HBO" with quality.
"Wild. Even David Zaslav wasn't that dumb," the Warner Bros. executive commented, implying that the Skydance brand holds less consumer recognition than either Paramount or Warner Bros. The article drew a parallel to Tribune Publishing's brief and unpopular rebranding to "Tronc," which lasted only a couple of years.
Paramount and Warner Bros. are historic studios with a century of significance in the cultural landscape. The casual shorthand names that had emerged for the combined entity, such as "Warnermount" and "ParaBros.," were reportedly favored by some industry professionals over the chosen corporate name. Ellison's decision to adopt his own company's name for the newly merged giants signifies a departure from their established legacies.
