Harry Potter HBO Series Adds James and Lily Potter, Charlie Weasley to Cast

The upcoming Harry Potter HBO series has cast the actors who will portray James and Lily Potter, the parents of the titular wizard, as well as Ron Weasley's older brother, Charlie.

Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn are set to play James and Lily Potter, respectively, and will appear in the first season of the series, titled "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone." In the film adaptations, James and Lily Potter primarily appeared in flashbacks, photographs, and magical manifestations.

HBO also announced that Harry Gilby will play Charlie Weasley, marking the character's screen debut. In J.K. Rowling's books, Charlie is a minor character who did not feature in the film series.

The series is scheduled to premiere on HBO on December 25. The first season will follow Harry Potter as he learns of his magical heritage and begins his studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The cast also includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer is Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu takes on the role of Severus Snape, and Nick Frost will portray Rubeus Hagrid. Kit Harington is slated to join the second season as Gilderoy Lockhart.

Francesca Gardiner is writing and executive producing the series, which is based on Rowling's novels. The show is intended to be a more faithful adaptation of the books than the original films. Rowling herself serves as an executive producer.

Filming for the second season is expected to begin this autumn. Rowling has previously expressed enthusiasm for the scripts of the first two episodes, describing them as "SO, SO, SO GOOD."

Since its announcement in 2023, the Harry Potter series has faced controversy, largely stemming from activist criticism of J.K. Rowling's public statements on women's rights. These controversies have led to calls for boycotts of adaptations of her work. Some actors have faced backlash, with Nicholas Hoult reportedly backing out of the project. Paapa Essiedu, cast as Severus Snape, has reported receiving death threats due to his casting.

Recent reports have also surfaced regarding alleged bullying on set, with Warner Brothers reportedly issuing warnings to cast and crew about behavior. Incidents involving young extras have also been noted, prompting management to address workplace conduct.
