Gyms Host DJ Nights to Attract Students

A Nottingham gym is drawing in students with a novel approach to nightlife: "barbells and beats" nights that feature DJs and fitness equipment, while consciously excluding alcohol. The concept aims to introduce students to the gym's offerings in a social and engaging environment.

Talia Miller, 24, and Chah Madina, students at Nottingham Trent University, described the event as a "cool concept" that showcases the gym's facilities while fostering social connections. Madina noted that she was trying out various pieces of equipment as if she were a prospective member.

The gym's membership typically starts at £65 per month, a price point Luke, the gym's manager, acknowledges may not be accessible to all students. He stated that these events are designed to "include them... and not alienate our current members," by providing a dedicated time for students to experience the facility.

DJ Esco-bar, a Nottingham-based DJ accustomed to playing club events and festivals, found himself spinning records in a gym for the first time in his 15-year career. He described the atmosphere as "lit" with "vibes on vibes," and beneficial for both his career and for connecting with the students.

Luke reported that approximately 250 students attended the launch event, an turnout that exceeded his expectations. He indicated that these "barbells and beats" nights are likely to become a regular fixture at the gym.
