Season 23 is slated to have 13 episodes. The previous season concluded with a major bridge collapse that propelled the Grey-Sloan doctors into action. That episode also marked the departure of Drs. Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman, who left for Paris after reconciling. In the wake of the collapse, Dr. Meredith Grey proposed to Dr. Nick Marsh, which he accepted, resolving a significant cliffhanger from Season 22. The season finale also set up storylines for the upcoming season, with Dr. Miranda Bailey planning to return to school and Dr. Blue Kwan vying to regain his standing in the residency program.
Key cast members returning for Season 23 include Ellen Pompeo as Dr. Meredith Grey, Chandra Wilson as Dr. Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr. as Dr. Richard Webber, Caterina Scorsone as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, Camilla Luddington as Dr. Jo Wilson, and Scott Speedman as Dr. Nick Marsh. The season will also feature Anthony Hill as Dr. Winston Ndugu, Alexis Floyd as Dr. Simone Griffith, Harry Shum Jr. as Dr. Benson “Blue” Kwan, Adelaide Kane as Dr. Jules Millin, Niko Terho as Dr. Lucas Adams, Trevor Jackson as Dr. Wes Bryant, Debbie Allen as Dr. Catherine Fox, Jennifer Landon as Dr. Toni Wright, and James Wolk as Dr. Seth Norton.
The episode titled 'Collide' will see the doctors racing to save lives amidst impossible choices as the hospital's new, controversial VIP floor is unveiled. The collision at Sea-Tac sends a surge of critically injured patients to Grey Sloan, throwing the opening of the new floor into chaos.
