Great British Bake Off Star Nikki’s Mother Dies

Great British Bake Off contestant Nikki has confirmed the death of her mother, Joyce, revealing that her illness was the reason she had to leave the competition. Nikki, 50, withdrew from the show during a signature challenge in a recent episode, citing "family matters." A tribute to her mother was subsequently shown during the program's credits.

In an Instagram post, Nikki shared a collection of photographs with her mother, writing, "This is a sad and bittersweet post to write. My beautiful Mama Joycey passed away earlier this year. This is the reason I had to leave the Bake Off tent - to come home and be with my beautiful mum in her final days."

Nikki described how her mother's health deteriorated rapidly, stating, "none of us were prepared for how quickly things would change." She credited her mother as the inspiration for her baking passion, which ultimately led her to the Bake Off tent. "My passion for baking was instilled in me from a very young age," Nikki wrote. "She taught us to experiment with flavours, use whatever you had in the cupboards or fridge and, most importantly, just make sure it tasted guuuuuud!"

Nikki recalled her mother's excitement when she learned of her participation in Bake Off, saying, "When I told Mum I had got onto Bake Off, she was absolutely over the moon. She cried, held me tightly and said: 'This is your time… and about bloody time!'" She continued to share her Bake Off journey with her mother, who offered encouragement and advice, particularly regarding the judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson.

"Mama was so happy and proud of me. She was one of my biggest champions, rooting for me from her hospital bed and always, always smiling for me," Nikki stated. She added that her mother wished to be at home for her final moments, a wish facilitated by "amazing" hospital and palliative care teams. Nikki was holding her mother's hand when she passed away.

Nikki expressed her belief that she made her mother proud during her time on the show. "Getting to experience the Bake Off tent was one of the most incredible things that has ever happened to me, and knowing that my mum was watching, cheering me on and feeling proud made it even more special." She concluded, "Mama Joycey will always be a huge part of my baking journey. Every time I bake, I carry a little piece of her with me."

Fellow Bake Off stars, including host Alison Hammond and judge Nigella Lawson, offered condolences on Nikki's post. Hammond wrote, "Massive condolences my darling. Love to you and all the family," while Lawson added, "Sending all love to you, sweetest Nikki!"

Following Nikki's departure, Tom was named Star Baker, and Molly was eliminated from the competition.
