Great British Bake Off's Nikki Leaves Show to Care for and Mourn Late Mother
The baker confirmed her mother's passing, stating her illness was the reason for her departure from the tent.
Nikki, a 50-year-old contestant on The Great British Bake Off, has confirmed the death of her mother, Joyce. Nikki had recently left the competition during the signature challenge, citing "family matters," and a tribute to her mother was subsequently shown during the program's credits.
In an Instagram post, Nikki shared that her mother had passed away earlier this year and that her illness was the reason for her needing to leave the Bake Off tent. "This is the reason I had to leave the Bake Off tent - to come home and be with my beautiful mum in her final days," Nikki wrote, sharing a series of photos with her mother. She described her mother's rapid deterioration and the family's unpreparedness for the swift changes.
Nikki credited her mother as the inspiration behind her passion for baking. "My passion for baking was instilled in me from a very young age. My sister and I followed in Mum's footsteps, baking – simply because we loved it," she explained. She recalled her mother's encouragement to experiment and ensure that baked goods "tasted guuuuuud!"
Her mother had been overjoyed when Nikki was selected for Bake Off, telling her, "This is your time… and about bloody time!" Nikki shared updates about her Bake Off journey with her mother, who offered advice, particularly regarding judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson. Nikki stated that her mother was proud and supportive, cheering her on from her hospital bed.
Nikki was present at home with her mother during her final moments, holding her hand as she took her last breath. "I held her hand when she took her last breath, and I remember whispering to her: 'I will continue to make you proud.' And I truly feel that I did," Nikki wrote. She reflected that experiencing the Bake Off tent was an incredible event, made even more special by knowing her mother was watching and feeling proud.
Fellow Bake Off stars offered condolences on Nikki's post. Host Alison Hammond wrote, "Massive condolences my darling. Love to you and all the family," while Nigella Lawson commented, "Sending all love to you, sweetest Nikki!"
Following Nikki's departure, Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson awarded Star Baker to Tom, and Molly was eliminated from the competition.
