Glee Set for Reboot, Hulu and Disney+ Announce
The Emmy-winning musical comedy-drama that aired from 2009 to 2015 will return, according to an announcement from the show's official social media.
The popular high school musical comedy-drama Glee is slated for a return, with Disney and Hulu announcing the reboot on Wednesday via the show's social media channels.
The series, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, originally premiered on Fox in 2009 and concluded its six-season run in 2015. Glee chronicled the experiences of the fictional McKinley High School's glee club, known as the New Directions, and explored themes of sexuality, race, disability, and mental health through song and dance.
Original cast members included Lea Michele as ambitious singer Rachel Berry, Amber Riley, the late Cory Monteith, Jane Lynch as cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, and Matthew Morrison as choir director Will Schuester. The show was recognized for its covers of popular songs, which introduced older hits to new audiences. During its original run, Glee achieved significant commercial success, with its cast surpassing The Beatles for the most appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 by a group.
Co-creator Ryan Murphy has reportedly been in contact with approximately ten original cast members about the reboot and has written a script with collaborators Falchuk and Brennan. Murphy described the cast's reaction as "enthusiastic."
Several cast members have expressed interest in returning. Lea Michele stated her enduring affection for the show and a willingness to participate in future projects from Murphy. However, Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, noted the potential challenges of a reboot following the death of Naya Rivera, who portrayed Santana Lopez. Rivera passed away in 2020 at the age of 33. Rivera's death marked the third loss among the Glee cast; Cory Monteith died in 2013, and Mark Salling died five years later.
In a recent reunion, Darren Criss, who played Blaine Anderson, performed a duet with Chris Colfer at London's Royal Albert Hall.
