Glastonbury Shifts Focus to Younger Headliners, Moves Away from Music Veterans
Festival taps Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and Sam Fender, signaling a generational change in its top-billed acts.
Glastonbury Festival is set to feature headline acts with an average age under 30 for its upcoming return, marking a departure from its historical reliance on veteran rock artists. American pop sensation Billie Eilish, 24, is slated to perform on the Pyramid stage, joining previously reported headliners Harry Styles and Sam Fender, both 32.
This strategic shift aims to capture a younger demographic, a move underscored by the festival's experience the previous year. In 2026, 80-year-old Neil Young's headline set on the Saturday night reportedly saw dwindling crowds as attendees migrated to see the younger Brat star Charli XCX. Similarly, 81-year-old Sir Rod Stewart's performance in the Sunday afternoon "legends slot" received mixed reviews.
While not yet officially confirmed, former Take That singer Robbie Williams, 29, is also rumored to be performing, indicating a continued focus on contemporary stars.
Eilish, who recently completed her Grammy-nominated album "Hit Me Hard And Soft" tour, boasts a significant following among Generation Z. She has performed at Glastonbury twice before, first in 2019 and then in 2022, when she became the festival's youngest solo headliner at age 20.
The festival has faced challenges in securing female headliners. In 2023, an all-male lineup on the Pyramid stage drew criticism, prompting organizers to book two female artists, Dua Lipa and SZA, in 2024. However, sound issues marred those performances.
Organizers have long sought to secure Harry Styles for a headline slot, but scheduling conflicts have previously prevented his appearance. This year, Styles has a break in his world tour dates, creating an opening.
Sam Fender's position as a headliner was confirmed last week. The North Shields-based musician previously played an evening slot on the Pyramid stage in 2022 and is now set for his first headline performance. Fender has had a successful year, with his song "Rein Me In," a collaboration with Olivia Dean, setting a record as the longest-running No. 1 single in UK history, spending 23 weeks at the top of the charts.
Tickets for Glastonbury 2027, which accommodates 210,000 attendees, sold out in just 42 minutes on Sunday, despite no performers having been officially announced at that time.
