Glasgow Neighborhood Named Coolest in UK by Time Out

Govanhill in Glasgow has been recognized as the coolest neighborhood in the United Kingdom for 2026 by Time Out magazine. The publication’s annual list, compiled with input from local experts, highlights 11 neighborhoods across the UK that offer unique character and appeal.

Govanhill, described as densely populated and multicultural, boasts a variety of delis, curry houses, trendy cafes, and traditional pubs. Beyond its culinary offerings, the area is home to the Tramway theatre and is close to Hampden Park, which hosts concerts and football matches. Time Out noted that Gen Z residents are contributing to the neighborhood's lively energy with new, trendy spots.

In addition to its top ranking in the UK, Govanhill was also named the fifth coolest neighborhood globally by Time Out.

Securing the second position is Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. This area is celebrated for its colorful streets, rich history, independent restaurants, trendy bars, and music venues. The neighborhood also has a significant art scene, with galleries like the Golden Thread Gallery and Belfast Exposed. Time Out suggests exploring beyond the well-known neon umbrellas in Commercial Court to discover more authentic experiences.

London's Newington Green ranked third, noted for its leafy character and escape from the city's hustle. The neighborhood features numerous cafes, pubs, and notable restaurants such as Perilla, Cadet, and Jolene.

The Underbanks and central Stockport area secured the fourth spot. This historic part of Stockport’s old town is characterized by vibrant street art and local history. Time Out identifies Central Stockport as a favored destination for creatives, citing its affordable rent and charm.

Leith Walk in Edinburgh placed fifth, a 1.2-mile stretch connecting the city center to the maritime port area. The street is lined with a diverse array of establishments including bakeries, clubs, bookshops, and restaurants.

Other neighborhoods making the list include Crookes in Sheffield, known for its restaurants, pubs, and independent shops; Heaton in Newcastle, a lively suburb with a mix of students and young families and a variety of eateries; Beeston in Nottingham, a vibrant town drawing significant weekly visitors and offering a wide range of shops and markets; Central St Leonards in East Sussex, a seaside area with an indoor market and dining options; the Georgian Quarter in Liverpool, featuring historic architecture, two cathedrals, and performing arts institutions; and Old Market in Bristol, recognized for its inclusive atmosphere, local restaurants, and historic architecture.

These neighborhoods were selected for their ability to offer something distinct, from bustling urban centers to quieter, character-filled enclaves. The list aims to highlight both established vibrant spots and emerging gems across the UK.
