Gaten Matarazzo Finds New Rhythm in West End Debut with "Rent"
The "Stranger Things" star discusses the discipline of live theater and the enduring relevance of the rock musical.
Gaten Matarazzo, known for his role as Dustin Henderson in the Netflix series "Stranger Things," has transitioned from battling fictional monsters to performing on the live stage in a revival of the rock musical "Rent." Matarazzo is currently playing Mark Cohen in the production on London's West End, a move he describes as a "refreshing change" from the demanding schedule of filming.
"Stranger Things" concluded its five-season run in December 2024, prompting interest in the future endeavors of its cast. Matarazzo, who began his acting career on Broadway as a child, stated that finishing the show meant "there's no more show to film." He expressed his continued passion for acting and his desire to pursue new opportunities.
The actor highlighted the "refreshing" aspect of a consistent theater schedule, including set times for sleeping and waking, which he finds conducive to his well-being. "I've always thrived under a schedule and when I don't have one I feel insane," Matarazzo shared.
In "Rent," Matarazzo portrays a struggling filmmaker who narrates the lives of his friends. The musical, which first premiered off-Broadway 30 years ago, continues to resonate with contemporary audiences. Matarazzo pointed to songs like "What You Own" as being "incredibly relevant" today, reflecting themes of information overload.
Originally staged in the late 1980s and early 1990s, "Rent" explored the lives of young artists in New York City during the HIV/AIDS crisis and was noted for its groundbreaking engagement with social taboos and LGBTQ+ stories. Co-star Travis Ross, who plays Roger, noted that the show's themes still "ring true" and foster a strong connection between the cast and audience, calling it a "really beautiful community-driven piece of art."
Matarazzo acknowledged the significant time commitment required for his role in "Rent," noting that he is on stage for most of the show and singing throughout. He described the role as fitting well within his vocal range but emphasized the importance of precise execution due to the sheer volume of singing required.
"I just always love the opportunity to start and finish a character arc and story in real time," Matarazzo said, a contrast to the stop-and-start nature of filming. He added that while he cherishes his time on "Stranger Things," describing it as "the greatest honour of my life," he is open to future possibilities without regret.
"Rent" is playing at The Tom Stoppard Theatre in London, with Gaten Matarazzo scheduled to perform until January 10.
