Gary Waddell, Australian Actor, Dies at 74 After Battle with Dementia

Australian actor Gary Waddell died this week at the age of 74 following a battle with dementia, his management confirmed.

Waddell's career spanned decades, with notable roles in films such as "Pure S**t," for which he won an AFI Best Actor award, "Dirty Deeds," "Gettin' Square," and "Chopper."

He also appeared in numerous Australian television series, including "A Country Practice," "Water Rats," "All Saints," "Home and Away," and "Rake." His final credited role was in the 2022 film "The Survival of Kindness."

Sophie Jermyn, of Sophie Jermyn Management, announced his death on Instagram, stating, "Gary was one of a kind, a true artist in every sense of the word and his body of Australian work was so utterly impressive." She added, "The SJM team send their love to Gary's family at this time. Thanks for everything, Gary - you will be missed. We've had a lot of fun over the years."

Waddell, who won a Best Supporting Actor AACTA Award in 2021 for his role in "The King is Dead!," described himself in a 2012 interview with Crikey as a homeless Melbourne teenager who found his path through the city's art scene. He recalled his first play in 1972, saying, "All of a sudden I was acting!"

Despite his acclaimed career, Waddell told The Guardian that he struggled with imposter syndrome for much of his professional life, believing he had "never thought I could act" until a trained actor recognized his natural talent.

Waddell rose to prominence in the 'Ozploitation' movies of the 1970s, winning an AFI Best Actor award for his role as a heroin addict in 1975's Pure S**t

News of his passing prompted a flood of tributes from fans and colleagues. "One of the finest actors anywhere, entirely self-taught," one fan wrote on Instagram. Actor Christian Manon commented that Waddell "brought a genuine and very rare street level authenticity to the Australian screen."

Singer Lo Carmen remembered him as a "one-of-a-kind, heart-of-f***ing-gold dude."

He went on to star in a large swathe of films, including Dirty Deeds, Gettin' Square and 2000's Chopper
