The mysterious forces that trap a family in their home in the film "The Last House" ultimately depart, leading to a hopeful yet ambiguous conclusion.

The film's ending sees the creatures speaking to the Delgado family, after which the rain stops and the house, whose foundation has been sinking, collapses. The creatures then disappear into the resulting hole. Following this, the Delgado family finds a boat, names it after their deceased dog Cassidy, and sails away while sending a radio message into the world.

As the message "Day 1" appears on screen, signaling a new beginning, a voice responds with "Hello?" before the film cuts to black.

Director Peter Robinson suggested the creatures' decision to leave was a reciprocal act of peace and understanding. He explained that both species were afraid of the other, but a moment of empathy allowed them to recognize their shared struggles for survival. "They can't understand each other, but they've seen how hard each other has struggled to survive. They're going to give them their lives back, in hopes that they'll do the same for them," Robinson said.

However, Robinson also acknowledged the open-ended nature of the conclusion, noting that the family remains unaware of the creatures' motivations. He mused that their departure might be followed by the creatures' re-emergence once the family sails away, leaving the possibility of renewed conflict open to interpretation.

"The Last House" depicts a family's fight for survival after being unexpectedly trapped in their home by unknown entities. The film explores themes of fear, understanding, and the fundamental will to survive in the face of overwhelming threats. The resolution offers a glimmer of hope for the family's future, while also leaving the audience to ponder the broader implications of the encounter and the true nature of the mysterious creatures.
