Elham, Kent: The village that nurtured young Audrey Hepburn

Long before her iconic roles in films like "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "My Fair Lady," Audrey Hepburn honed her musical and dance talents at a small village school in Kent. The future star spent three formative years in Elham, a village near Canterbury, before the outbreak of World War Two, a period local historians say was crucial in fostering her love for performance.

Today, a blue plaque on a cottage near the King's Arms pub marks the former residence where Hepburn lived between 1936 and 1939. Known then as Audrey Ruston-Hepburn, she arrived in Elham following her parents' separation. Her mother decided she should continue her English education in Kent, staying with family friends.

Hepburn resided at Orchard Cottage with the Butcher family, who, along with other Elham residents, provided accommodation for visitors in the pre-war years. Her education took place at Rigden School, situated in the center of the village. According to Brian Badham of the Elham Historical Society, one of her teachers actively encouraged her involvement in music and dance.

"It really was the starting point for the young Audrey Hepburn that she became," Badham stated, emphasizing the school's impact on her early development as a performer.
