Eileen Mayers, Coronation Street Actress, Dies at 94
Mayers, known for her role as Sheila Birtles on the long-running British soap opera, passed away on June 27, 2026.
Eileen Mayers, an actress best known for her role as Sheila Birtles on "Coronation Street," has died at the age of 94. Her death occurred on June 27, 2026.
Mayers portrayed the factory worker Sheila Birtles on the ITV soap opera from 1960 to 1963 and again in the early 1970s. She appeared in a total of 161 episodes across her tenure on the show.
An announcement in The Times stated: "Sheila Birtles in Coronation Street between 1960-63, she is now 'resting' for ever. God bless."
During her time on "Coronation Street," Mayers was part of a storyline that was dramatically altered after it generated significant public backlash. Producers had initially planned for her character, Sheila, to die by suicide following a difficult love affair. However, the plot details were leaked before the episodes aired, leading to public outcry and a subsequent rewrite of the storyline by producer Margaret Morris.
Mayers spoke about the controversy surrounding her exit in the documentary "The Corrie Years." She recalled emerging from Granada Television to find a throng of journalists, expressing her surprise at the media attention. "It is disappointing when you think 'Oh that's it, that's good,' and then it doesn't get shown but that's the way it is," she stated. She added that she would have preferred the episode to have been screened rather than being the subject of front-page news.
Beyond "Coronation Street," Mayers also appeared in episodes of "Keep It In The Family" and "I'm Not Bothered."
Fans shared their grief online, with one noting: "Ah, I've just read in the latest edition of Equity magazine that the actress Eileen Mayers has recently died. She played Sheila Birtles in the early episodes of Coronation Street. Sad news."
Another fan posted: "Sad to read that actress Eileen Mayers died in June aged 94. Her best known role was Sheila Birtles in Coronation Street." A third expressed their condolences: "I am incredibly sad to see she has passed, sincerely RIP to her."
Mayers' acting career began at the age of 15 at the Oldham Repertory Theatre.
