EbonyLife Place Opens in London, Boosting Black and African Cinema

A new cultural center dedicated to Black and African cinema, EbonyLife Place, has officially opened in London. The hub, located near Nine Elms in south-west London, was inaugurated with a ceremony attended by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and its founder, Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu.

Abudu, who was born in London, stated that the initiative stems from a desire to create a platform for stories that have historically been underrepresented. "We don't have enough spaces to serve black cinema in the United Kingdom... representation is so important to us," Abudu said during the opening. She emphasized the growing audience interested in diverse storytelling and the quality of films produced within Black and African cinema.

At the core of EbonyLife Place is a 160-seat auditorium that will feature a year-round film program, with a primary focus on Nollywood cinema from Nigeria and other films reflecting the Black experience. The venue also plans to host masterclasses, industry panels, and live performances featuring both established and emerging talent.

The 160-seat auditorium will have a full programme of black and African cinema

Beyond the cinema, the multi-story venue includes a bar, a lounge named "Fàhinti" (a Yoruba term meaning to lean back and rest), a Nigerian restaurant, a boutique showcasing African and diaspora designers, and an art collection featuring works by artists from the African diaspora.

The project, largely financed by Abudu's media group, is modeled after a similar upscale lifestyle complex she launched in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2019. Mayor Khan highlighted London's position as a global leader in film production, stating that the city is the top location for filming in Europe. "As long as I'm mayor, we'll invest in culture," he affirmed.

The opening of EbonyLife Place coincides with the London Film Festival.
