EastEnders' Sonia and Jamie reunite after 24 years for National Rail campaign

Actors Natalie Cassidy and Jack Ryder, who portrayed the ill-fated teenage couple Sonia Fowler and Jamie Mitchell in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, have reunited 24 years after their characters' tragic storyline concluded. The pair, who played Sonia and Jamie, last saw each other when filming their final scenes in 2002.

Cassidy, 43, and Ryder, 45, have joined forces for a National Rail campaign titled 'Proper Catch-Up Carriage.' The initiative encourages passengers to disengage from their mobile devices and foster in-person conversations during train journeys.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, the actors shared that their reunion for the campaign marked the first time they had seen each other in person since their EastEnders days. Cassidy described the reunion as an emotional moment, stating, "When we saw each other on the train platform [for the campaign], we just didn't let go of one another. It was like coming home. We are like brother and sister."

"It's been 24 years but I am so pleased we've seen each other and we won't leave it that long again," she added.

Their characters' storyline on EastEnders culminated on Christmas Day in 2002. In a dramatic episode, Sonia, then 15, gave birth to a daughter named Chloe, conceived through a one-night stand with Martin Fowler. Shortly after, Jamie was tragically killed when he was run over by Martin Fowler as he was on his way to buy Sonia an engagement ring.

Both actors experienced personal challenges around the time of filming their exit scenes. Cassidy revealed that she had lost her mother in May 2022, and channeling her grief into the storyline proved difficult. "I found the storyline really painful. I channelled a lot of my grief into it," she said.

Ryder, speaking to The Sun, explained that he left the soap at the peak of his fame at age 21 because the intense attention became overwhelming. "I just couldn't go anywhere," he recalled. "I was getting so much attention and stuff - there was such a big impact in that sense. It was hard and a whirlwind. It was a mad thing and I didn't really align with it."

The pair's popularity at the time was so significant that they were reportedly asked to leave a McDonald's due to security concerns. Ryder was a frequent feature on teenagers' most-desired lists and experienced significant public attention, including having a stalker.

Ryder later married Hear'Say singer Kym Marsh in August 2002, though they separated six years later. He is now in a relationship with Ella and they have a five-year-old daughter, Marnie. Cassidy is in a long-term relationship with BBC cameraman Marc Humphrey, with whom she has a daughter, Joanie, born in 2016. She also has another daughter, Eliza, from a previous relationship.
